Puerto Rico

Life holds a fundamental irony for four-star chef Eric Ripert--the more successful he becomes, the further he is taken from the love that made him a success in the first place. As his days get consumed with business decisions and staffing issues, the question arises--"But when do I get to cook?"A Return to Cooking is Ripert's personal quest for the answer: a journey in four different seasons to four different locales to "cook the landscape" and "cook from the guts," using local seasonal ingredients in home kitchens and experiencing the joys--and occasional disappointments--of this spontaneous, creative act. From California to Puerto Rico, Vermont to Long Island, Ripert was joined by Colombian artist Valentino Cortazar and photographers Tammar and Shimon Rothstein, who captured his journey in their artistry. Dozens of essays on subjects such as handling raw fish, the power of vinaigrette, the virtues of Tabasco, shallots, and lemon confit enhance this eminently practical book's richly flavorful recipes.

Puerto Rico

Popular Atlanta Braves catcher Javier “Javy” Lopez opens up in this autobiography to tell his amazing story, from learning to play baseball on a neighborhood basketball court to his record of 42 home runs in a season by a catcher. The product of a lower-middle-class background in Puerto Rico, Javy had to overcome numerous hardships—not the least of which was a language barrier—to fulfill his destiny as one of the most accomplished catchers of the modern era. He tells of bumps along the way to success, including why he overstated his signing bonus as well as the time in the minors when he cried during an all-night meltdown due to his struggles on the field. But he went on to be named MVP of the 1996 National League Championship Series, and played on 12 of the Atlanta Braves’ unprecedented 14 straight division-winning teams of the 1990s and 2000s. From his relationship with great teammates such as Greg Maddux and John Smoltz, to his failed comeback attempt with the Braves in 2008, this autobiography tells all about the handsome, warm, engaging Lopez and how he became one of baseball’s most popular players.

Dive into the tales of Puerto Rico--in Spanish and in English!

In Stories from Spain/Historias de Puerto Rico, we've placed the Spanish and English stories side by side--lado a lado--so you can practice and improve your reading skills in your new language while enjoying the support of your native language. This way, you'll avoid the inconvenience of constantly having to look up unfamiliar words and expressions in a dictionary. Read as much as you can understand, and then look to the facing page for help. As you read, you can check your comprehension by comparing the two versions of the story. You'll also find a bilingual vocabulary list at the end of the book, so you'll have a handy reference for new words.

Stories from Spain/Historias de Puerto Rico allows you to explore the island's rich history. It includes 18 well-known Puerto Rican legends that stretch from the dawn of creation to the twentieth century. These tales will introduce you to an array of characters as dynamic and colorful as the country that gave birth to them. Animals, indigenous peoples, conquistadors, spiritual beings, and extraterrestrials are among those who will make these pages come alive for you! As you read these stories side by side, you will be not only fine-tuning your language skills but also gaining insight into the rich cultural heritage of the Puerto Rican people.

Puerto Rico

A lively, panoramic survey of the cultural, historical, and geographic aspects of la isla del encanto (the island of enchantment)

This reader-friendly, illustrated history of Puerto Rico tells the story of the only Spanish country in the Americas that never gained its independence. It describes the 200 million year-old geology and geography and the approximately 5,000 years of human history.

The native peoples from Florida and/or South America evolved into the Tainos. In 1508, attracted by gold, Spain began colonization (bringing African slaves). During 390 years of royal and Catholic rule the three races blended, the Tainos drastically declined, and French, English, and Dutch tried to capture Puerto Rico-and slowly, San Juan's spectacular protective castles, walls, and historic buildings were constructed. When gold was worked out, for 200 years the isolated population struggled to exist with crops, cattle, and limited trade. When in the 1700s and 1800s Spain again took an economic interest in the island agriculture flourished, with increasing trade to Europe and USA. Population expanded rapidly, national sentiment grew, and native-born Puerto Ricans strove for independence.

In 1898 the USA captured the country and made it America's Caribbean bulwark. The US-dominated economy changed from agriculture to manufacturing, while hundreds of thousands of struggling people immigrated to the United States. Made US citizens in 1917, Puerto Ricans were very slowly granted more self-government. They sought a permanent political status acceptable to all Puerto Ricans, and to US Congress-which still holds plenary powers. Nowadays, only a small percentage of the island's population are in favor of independence; the majority supporting about evenly the current semi-autonomous Commonwealth of Puerto Rico (established 1952), and becoming a US state.

Sidebars, island tidbits, literary extracts, cultural highlights (including cuisine and science), and must-see sights complement the historical overview and showcase all that this beautiful island has to offer.

This volume includes:
* A lively, comprehensive account of the island's past and present history
* Historical maps
* Full-color and b&w then and now photographs
* Famous sons & daughters
* Interesting state tidbits
* Literary extracts
* Must-see sites
* Visitor resources
